The ABCs of Black Wall Street

The ABCs of Black Wall Street takes readers on a nostalgic trip through the heart of Tulsa's historic Greenwood District.

In the first ABC book dedicated to Black Wall Street, children quickly realize that "A" isn't always for "apple."

From Madam C.J. Walker and O.W. Gurley, to Williams Dreamland Theater and Osborne Monroe's Roller Skating Rink, children learn about the innovators, activists, and establishments that created one of America's wealthiest Black communities.

The HBCU Prep School

HBCU Prep School is a publishing and education company that amplifies Black voices and Black joy in children's literature.

Far too often, children only learn about important African-American icons during Black History Month.

According to a 2014 report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, 85 percent of states failed to accurately teach about the civil rights movement. In addition, when Black history is taught, it’s often reduced to slavery and segregation.

To fill this gap and broaden the narrative, Claudia Walker launched The HBCU Prep School.

As a mother, teacher, and proud graduate of Spelman College, Claudia understands the importance of literacy, education, and representation.

HBCUs attract the best and brightest students from all over the world.  Yet, like many HBCU students, Claudia admits that it wasn’t until she attended Spelman that she began to understand the fullness of Black history.

Inspired by her experiences as a student and teacher, Claudia launched The HBCU Prep School to bring rich, empowering, and authentic stories of the Black experience into homes and classrooms everywhere.

Her debut book, The ABCs of HBCUs, was released in December 2020.
